Nicola Sturgeon's plan for an independent Scotland to join the European Union have been dealt a blow after officials said the Euro must be used if an application is to be successful.
The First Minister laid out her plans to continue using the pound following a 'Yes' vote with the country eventually moving towards a Scottish pound when the time is right.
In the latest independence paper from the Scottish Government Sturgeon announced that Scotland would apply to rejoin the EU in a bid to access the single market.
However, her plan has been thrown up in the air after four senior officials in Brussels told T he Times that said the SNP would need to agree to adopting the single currency for any bid to be successful.
In order to create the Scottish pound, the Scottish Government would have to set up a central bank, the process for which the paper said would start immediately after a vote for independence.
Countries looking to join are "required to adopt the Euro and join the Euro area", according to the European Union's own rules. While one source told The Times: "No euro, no membership."
The comments will come as a blow to the SNP's case for independence following the latest paper which admitted there would be checks on goods moving between Scotland and England to meet EU laws.
A Scottish Government spokesperson said: "An independent Scotland would benefit from re-joining the European Union and the EU will equally gain from Scotland's membership.
"Scotland will continue to use sterling at the point of independence and establish a Scottish pound as soon as practicable."
