Nicola Sturgeon has said she is "hopeful and optimistic" that judges will rule in the Scottish Government's favour when they assess her referendum plan.
The UK Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments today on whether Holyrood has the power to hold a second vote on independence without obtaining prior approval from the UK Government.
The First Minister announced in the summer it was her intention to stage an IndyRef2 on October 19 next year - but only if the referendum could not be subjected to legal challenge.
Lawyers representing the UK Government will argue that as constitutional matters are reserved to Westminster, judges should rule against the plan.
Sturgeon spoke to reporters at the SNP conference in Aberdeen before her set-piece speech to members.
Asked by the Record if she was confident of victory at the Supreme Court, she said: "I am very hopeful and optimistic of that.
"But anyone who knows anything about court hearings would know that there's not a lot of point about trying to second guess or speculate about the court's outcome - the arguments will be put and the court will decide. I respect the rule of law and I respect the process and we will see what comes out of that."
The First Minister has previously said that if the Supreme Court rules against her plans, the SNP would campaign solely on the issue of independence at the next general election - turning it into a "de facto" referendum.
Under Sturgeon’s definition, pro-independence parties would need to win more than 50 per cent of the vote.
