All of Nicki Minaj’s most iconic red carpet looks

Nicki Minaj takes the stage, the New York-reared diva wows not only with her talent, but with her royally outrageous wardrobe, too. And as a mistress of ceremonies at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday — a gig the voluminous voluptuary will anchor alongside fellow rappers LL Cool J, 54, and Jack Harlow, 24 — Minaj, 39, is sure to steal the show, riding high on a carousel of haute couture.   No stranger to pushing fashion beyond its limits with unabashed (and sometimes controversial) looks, the “Super Freaky Girl” chart-slayer, who will also be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs, boasts over a decade of daring outfits. From the infamous Versace “Pope” cape Minaj donned on the red carpet at the 2012 Grammys or the bosom-boosting Burberry ensemble she wore to the 2022 Met Gala in May, her style continues to keep fashionistas on their toes. Here’s a look back at Nicki’s gripping glam evolution.  Making her VMAs debut in 2010, the then pink-haired harmonizer stunned in a champagne-colored trouser and top set. The “Super Bass” bombshell, who performed with Will.i.am at the fete’s pre-show and presented an award alongside Katy Perry, completed her look with a pair of platform Versace pumps and a black bib necklace. Cranking up the heat with her cool-girl swag, Minaj turned heads at the 2011 VMAs by wearing a metallic purple mini dress atop a lacy pink tutu, star-printed tights and thigh-high socks covered in colorful anime cartoons.

Nicki Minaj becomes the first solo female rapper to have a single debut at Number One since 1998

Nicki Minaj has debuted at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 with her latest single, ‘Super Freaky Girl’, making her the first solo female rapper to achieve the feat in almost a quarter of a century. It’s one of two big feats Minaj accomplished with her first solo track in more than two years, as it’s also become her first Number One hit as a lead artist. The rapper has three to her name altogether, topping the Hot 100 twice in 2020 – first alongside Doja Cat with their collaborative ‘Say So’ remix, then with her 6ix9ine joint ‘Trollz’ (notably, though, the latter suffered the biggest-ever chart fall for a Number One debut).According to Billboard, ‘Super Freaky Girl’ – which samples heavily from Rick James’ 1981 hit ‘Super Freak’ – racked up a total of 12.1million streams, 4.6million impressions via live radio tune-ins, and 89,000 downloads in the first week of its release.

Nicki Minaj to receive Video Vanguard Award at 2022 MTV VMAs

Nicki Minaj is poised to receive MTV’s highly coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2022 Video Music Awards on Aug. 28. Upon accepting the enviable moon man — an accolade previously earned by the posh pop culture likes of Madonna, 63; Janet Jackson, 56; LL Cool J, 54; Missy Elliot, 51; and the late David Bowie — Minaj will make her long-awaited return to the VMAs stage for her first performance at the annual awards since 2018. “Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” said Bruce Gillmer, a top executive at Paramount+, which owns MTV Network, in a statement about the 39-year-old recipient. He continued: “She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki.'”The Video Vanguard honor for Minaj — a five-time VMA winner and 17-time nominee from Queens — comes as a boon amid a flurry of personal yet public hurdles. On Wednesday, Charles Polevich — the 73-year-old man responsible for killing her father, Robert Maraj, 64, in a February 2021 hit-and-run accident on Long Island — was sentenced to serve only one year in jail. In July, the “Anaconda” rapper’s husband, Kenneth Petty, 44, who was convicted of the attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in 1995, was sentenced to three years of probation and one year of home detention for failing to register as a sex offender in the state of California.
