When trying to eat healthier, snacks are one of the hardest foods to get right because there are so many unhealthy options around. From biscuits to crisps, if you’re craving a snack you might be tempted to reach for the carb-loaded options.
Even the ‘low calorie’ snacks on the market can sometimes be secretly loaded with sugar so finding genuinely healthy food is not always easy. The NHS has compiled a list of options to swap to if you’re feeling hungry between meals.
We all know which foods are less healthy but sometimes there seems to be no healthier equivalent to take its place. There are loads of innovative and surprising snacks out there just waiting to be tried.

Some of the simpler swaps are ones most dieters have already thought about, such as reaching for fruit over a chocolate bar. Most of these recommendations focus on low fat or low sugar options to make sure your snacks don’t derail your healthy eating.
A slice of malt loaf or fruited teacake
Fresh or tinned fruit (in juice, not syrup) or fruit salad
A scotch pancake or crumpet
Sugar-free jelly or lower-sugar custard
Crackers topped with lower-fat cheese
Bread or toast with lower-fat spread
A bagel topped with sliced banana
Plain popcorn or rice cakes
Unsalted mixed nuts
Chopped veg with lower-fat hummus
Lower-sugar yoghurts or lower-sugar rice pudding
The NHS says that fruit and vegetables are always the best choice when it comes to healthy snacks. With children who are eating packaged snacks, this should be limited to two per day - which is a good rule for any adults trying to eat healthier too.
