Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Netflix has acquired global rights to Italian rom-com “Era Ora” (“Still Time”), marking a rare instance in which an Italian comedy is set to gain worldwide visibility. “Still Time” is directed by Alessandro Aronadio, a Los Angeles Film School graduate whose first work “One Life, Maybe Two” launched from Berlin’s Panorama section. The concept comedy stars Edoardo Leo (“Perfect Strangers”) as a workaholic named Dante who is perpetually late to everything important and Barbara Ronchi, soon to be seen in Marco Bellocchio’s “La Conversione,” as his girlfriend Alice with whom Dante winds up leaping ahead a year every few hours, just as he wants to slow down.
After showing up hours late for his 40th birthday party, Dante wakes up the next day and it’s already the day of his 41st birthday and Alice is four months pregnant. Then upon waking up again Alice puts a baby girl in his arms. And so on. “Still Time,” which is an adaptation of Australian rom-com “Long Short Story” directed by Josh Lawson, is co-produced by Italy’s BIM Produzione, which is Wild Bunch Group Company; Palomar, a unit of France’s Mediawan Group; and Italy’s Vision Distribution. The film, which launched positively from the Rome Film Festival in October 2022, will drop on Netflix as an Italian original, on March 16, in 190 countries. Though it’s rare for Italian comedies and genre movies at large to play globally these days, there are sporadic cases in which they’ve become international hits. One being Paolo Genovese’s “Perfect Strangers,” which folllowing its 2016 Italian release made more than $30 million worldwide and spawned more than 20 remakes, and Alessandro Genovesi’s satirical whodunit “7 Women and a

Given the whole focus of the event was styling, it’s not surprising that the sisters used it as an opportunity to push a more directional aesthetic in contrasting—but equally fashion-forward—looks. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hasn’t officially declared himself a candidate for the 2024 presidential election at this point, and that’s fine by Whoopi Goldberg and the hosts of “The View.” That’s because, as Whoopi so bluntly put it on Thursday morning, DeSantis is “not ready for America.”To kick off the day’s Hot Topics discussion, the women discussed their opinions on how DeSantis has positioned himself politically thus far, particularly with his responses to twice-impeached former president Donald Trump’s attacks, as well as DeSantis’ own gripes about “wokeness.”When Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines began debating if DeSantis is actually playing a smart long game, having gone to both Yale and Harvard, Whoopi noted that DeSantis’ degrees don’t mean much to her.“Just because people have education, doesn’t mean they have any kind of real sense,” Whoopi said.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Italian Canadian actor Giacomo Gianniotti, who played Dr. Andrew DeLuca on “Grey’s Anatomy,” is set to star in “Inganno,” Netflix’s Italian adaptation of the U.K. TV series “Gold Digger” that starts shooting this week on the Amalfi coast. The taboo-breaking show – which was dubbed a “toyboy thriller” by the British press – depicts the passionate and turbulent relationship between an older woman and a man who is half her age. In this case the affair disrupts and subverts Italian social and family norms. A “Gold Digger” adaptation for Indian audiences is also reportedly in the works. “Inganno,” which means “deceit” in Italian, is being directed by Neapolitan auteur Pappi Corsicato whose “The Seed of Discord” competed at the Venice Film Festival in 2008. Corsicato’s visual style is often compared to Pedro Almodovar, of whom he has been an assistant.

The exact cause of Maselli’s death was not revealed.
Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Italy’s 40% tax rebates for international film and TV series are a magnet that has been crucial to luring lots of shoots to the country. These incentives are behind the current contemporaneous presence on the Cinecittà Studios lot of Oscar-winner Edward Berger’s new film “Conclave,” Netflix period soap “Decameron,” and Roland Emmerich’s Peacock gladiator series “Those About to Die,” to name a few examples. That’s why Italian Deputy Culture Minister Lucia Bergonzoni on Oscar week travelled to Los Angeles to meet with Hollywood studio and streamer chiefs. Her mission: to dispel fears swirling in the global film community ever since Italy’s new right-wing government was installed in October 2022 regarding the prospect that the Italian rebates could be pulled or in some way watered down.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Michael Keaton’s Batman isn’t the only big comic book character return happening in Warner Bros.’ long-awaited “The Flash.” As the film’s official trailer confirmed last month, Michael Shannon is also coming back to the DC Universe as “Man of Steel” villain General Zod in the upcoming Ezra Miller-led comic book tentpole. Shannon admitted in a recent interview with Looper that he was quite baffled when the offer came in to reprise General Zod. “I was a little confused,” Shannon said. “I said, ‘As memory serves me, I think I died in ‘Man of Steel.’ Are they sure they got the right guy?’ But then they explained to me the whole multiverse phenomenon, which I was a little behind the times on that. I can’t say that I’m a huge consumer of this genre of films — not that I have anything against them. If I’m going to watch a movie, the odds are it’s not going to be one of those, but I sure love making them.”

Naman Ramachandran Netflix and the U.K.’s National Youth Theatre have launch an awareness program after a survey revealed alarming concerns about nepotism in the creative industries. A National Youth Theatre survey of 3,000 young people across the U.K. found that the “nepo-baby” effect extended beyond on screen talent to behind the scenes roles too. Some 79% of young people believed they need connections rather than talent and determination to make it and a further two-thirds (68%) thought they needed to live in a big city to have a career in TV or film. To alleviate these concerns, IGNITE Your Creativity, a free program from Netflix and the National Youth Theatre, aims to help young people build networks and raise awareness about the wide range of behind the scenes careers in film, TV and theatre. The program will support 500 young people aged 14-25 years in South Wales, West Yorkshire and the Northeast of the country.
