A 15-year-old fatally shot on his grandmother’s front porch in Washington, D.C., last week reportedly was killed less than a mile away from where his father was also murdered roughly one year ago.  At approximately 3:39 p.m. on Thursday, Andre Robertson, Jr., 15, was fatally shot in the 500 block of 48th Place, NE.  The Metropolitan Police Department said on Friday it’s seeking the public’s assistance in gathering information regarding the homicide, and no arrests have been announced since then.  FOX 5 DC reported that police are searching for three suspects who allegedly hopped out of a metallic sedan and approached Robertson, Jr., in front of the residence, opening fire while several other people were also on the porch.The suspect got back into the vehicle and fled the scene, police said.  On Thursday, October 13, 2022, at approximately 3:39 p.m., Andre Robertson, Jr.

A South Carolina man almost lost out on $300,000 after forgetting he purchased a scratch-off lottery ticket during a quick trip to a gas station. The man, who wished to remain anonymous but is from the Midlands area, drove around with the winning ticket for two days before remembering he had bought it, according to the South Carolina Education Lottery. "I threw the ticket in the car’s console and forgot about it," the man told lottery officials.

As the battle over parental rights and protections for LGBT students heats up in Virginia, one state delegate said she will introduce a bill in the legislature's next session that would make it a crime for a parent or guardian not to affirm their child's sexual orientation or gender identity.  The move is in response to Republican Virginia Gov. Critics slammed Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday for referring to America's youth as "our children" during her interview with late night talk show host Seth Meyers.  "When you see our kids, and I truly believe that they are our children, they are the children of our country, of our communities, I mean, our future is really bright if we, if we prioritize them, and therefore prioritize the climate crisis and the need to address it. If we think about our children, prioritizing the need to bring our country together," Harris said.  Harris and Meyers were discussing a photo of the vice president surrounded by children in a classroom in Connecticut.

Berenson feels people familiar with his 2019 book "Tell Your Children: The Truth About Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence," which links marijuana use and mental illness, would be surprised that he isn’t mad over Biden’s decision.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Thursday signed off on an independent commission's recommendations to remove from U.S. military facilities, "all names, symbols, displays, monuments, and paraphernalia that honor or commemorate the Confederacy." "The installations and facilities that our Department operates are more than vital national security assets.They are also powerful public symbols of our military, and of course, they are the places where our Service members and their families work and live." Austin wrote in a memo to senior officials on Friday.

Small-town Main Streets around the country are competing to win the title of Great American Main Street.  The award, first given out in 1995, has recognized over 100 Main Streets in America since the program's start.  The Great American Main Street Award recognizes outstanding Main Street communities that can serve as a model across the country for preservation-based district revitalization.  Main Street America, a nonprofit, has announced the top eight semifinalists for the 2023 award including Danville, Virginia, Denison, Texas, Florence, South Carolina and Metuchen, New Jersey. The winners will be announced on March 27, 2023, during the Opening Plenary of the 2023 Main Street Now conference in Boston.

President Biden will pardon all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession, the White House said Thursday. The move applies to those convicted of simple possession of marijuana, including those in the District of Columbia, according to senior officials.  "As I’ve said before, no one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana," Biden tweeted Thursday.
