National Album Day 2022: The biggest debut albums from every UK region and nation revealed

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Grammy and Oscar winning singer-songwriter Sam Smith has announced their fourth studio album, “Gloria,” will be released on January 27, 2023 via Capitol Records. Made with longtime collaborators Jimmy Napes, Stargate and Max Martin stablemate Ilya, the album is described in the announcement as “not only a creative revelation but something of a personal revolution for the celebrated artist. Lyrically, the subjects dive deep and wide, into contemporary narratives around sex, lies, passion, self-expression and imperfection.” Smith says, “It feels like emotional, sexual and spiritual liberation. It was beautiful, with this album, to sing freely again. Oddly, it feels like my first-ever record. And it feels like a coming of age.”

Meat Loaf‘s ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ has been named as the best-selling debut album in UK chart history.Compiled by The Official Charts Company in partnership with National Album Day, which will take place tomorrow (October 15), the ‘Official All-Time Debut Albums Top 20’ has placed the late artist’s 1977 solo album at the top.The chart is based on combined UK sales and streams since records began in 1956, with Meat Loaf having sold over 3.5million copies of ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ in the UK alone to date.Second in the chart is James Blunt‘s 2004 LP ‘Back To Bedlam’, with Leona Lewis (‘Spirit’, 2007), Lady Gaga (‘The Fame’, 2008) and Dido (‘No Angel’, 1999) rounding out the top five.Other entrants in the top 20 include debut albums by the Spice Girls, Coldplay, Mike Oldfield, Adele, The Killers, Guns N’ Roses and Oasis. National Album Day returns for its fifth edition on Saturday (October 15) with the 2022 event set to celebrate debut albums from across multiple genres and decades.Franz Ferdinand and Sam Ryder will serve as ambassadors this year alongside KSI, The Mysterines, The Staves, Jake Bugg, India Arkin and others. Around 30 classic debut albums will be reissued alongside new debut LPs to coincide with National Album Day.“What a glorious medium the album is,” Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos said in a statement.“On the most basic level it’s a bunch of songs that sound good together, but what I love is that it is a moment in time for the artist and the listener, a way to define a period of a lifetime.
