A mum-of-three died after struggling to cope with lockdown restrictions, an inquest heard.
Laura Medcalf was found unresponsive at the Moorside Unit at Trafford General Hospital on February 17, 2021. She was rushed to the intensive care unit but sadly went into cardiac arrest and died.
The 45-year-old had been referred to the mental health ward just months earlier after overdosing on painkillers in December 2020. An inquest into her death was held by senior coroner Alison Mutch at Stockport Coroner’s Court on Monday (April 4).
It heard how Mrs Medcalf’s husband Paul first became aware of her mental health struggles following her overdose on December 10. He told the court he was driving home from work when he took a call from Mrs Medcalf.

He recalled her acting oddly on the phone, saying she “just wanted to go to sleep”. Paramedics arrived at their home and took Mrs Medcalf to hospital. She was then admitted to the Moorside Unit where she stayed on the Medlock Ward for two weeks before being discharged and returning home to Urmston.
But Mr Medcalf knew his wife was still ill and took her back to the Moorside Unit the following day. The same month, Mrs Medcalf overdosed again on alcohol and medication.
During her time on the ward, Mrs Medcalf, who moved to Manchester from Northampton in 2005, told nurses she felt stressed because of her home life and lockdown. She said she liked having a routine and felt that had been taken away from her.
