‘Black Barbie’ Review: Witty and Weighty Doc Dives Into the History of the 1980s Doll

Lisa Kennedy “I hate dolls,” writer-director Lagueria Davis states early in her debut documentary “Black Barbie.” By turns a celebration and an interrogation (sometime both simultaneously), the film delves into the history of the titular Black doll Mattel released in 1980. That was 31 years after the first Barbie began her rise to becoming the most iconic, uncomfortably influential, doll in American history. Davis makes a jam-packed argument that the road to Barbie diversity and inclusion has been long and marked by detours, intersections and, maybe a dead end or two. Davis’ first-person, inflected journey — often witty, often weighty — will lead her to a reconsideration of her antipathy (which she attributed to being a tomboy). Her reason for this rethink is personal — and adorable.

CNBC Calls for Production Hiatus of Long-Running ‘American Greed’

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor CNBC has lost some of its avarice for the long-running primetime series “American Greed.” The documentary program, which examines white-collar crime, scams and embezzlement, among other business-focused wrongdoing, has been running on the NBCUniversal business-news channel since 2007, completing 15 seasons and 222 episodes, along with three spin-offs. In 2023, however, the series order was significantly smaller than those in the past, according to two people familiar with the matter, and production of original episodes has ceased for the moment. “CNBC has not canceled ‘American Greed,'” the network said in a statement. Six new episodes ran between January 24 and March 7 of this year. Past seasons have included 12 episodes or more, according to one of the people familiar with the program

Morgan Freeman sounds off on Black History Month, dubs it an 'insult'

The Sunday Times, the celebrated actor didn't mince words when broached with either of the topics, stating, "Two things I can say publicly that I do not like: Black History Month is an insult. You're going to relegate my history to a month?"Race was brought up after the UK publication asked Morgan about comments he made in 2005, wherein he opined that race shouldn't be discussed. "I'm going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a Black man," he said at the time. The Oscar winner still has similar thoughts, noting that he refuses to be defined by his race and hates the term "African American." "I don't subscribe to that title," he plainly stated.

Morgan Freeman: ‘Black History Month Is an Insult,’ and So Is the Term ‘African American’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director In a rare new interview while promoting his performance in Zach Braff’s “A Good Person,” Morgan Freeman told The Sunday Times that he’s insulted by Black History Month and the term “African-American.” “Two things I can say publicly that I do not like,” Freeman said. “Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month?” “Also ‘African-American’ is an insult,” he added. “I don’t subscribe to that title. Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African-American’. What does it really mean? Most black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”

Angela Bassett Recalls Holding Austin Butler’s Hand When He Lost the Oscar: ‘His Name Wasn’t Called, But He’s No Less a Winner’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director One of the many viral images that emerged out of the 2023 Oscars was the sight of Angela Bassett holding Austin Butler’s hand as the best actor category was announced. Butler was nominated in the category for his performance in “Elvis,” but he lost the Oscar to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser. The moment registered deeply across social media as Bassett endured her own Oscars loss in the best supporting actress race earlier in the ceremony. Bassett was nominated for her role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” but the Oscar went to Jamie Lee Curtis for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” “On the evening of the Oscars, with Austin seated next to me, I understood intimately what he felt when it was time to learn if he would climb those stairs to the stage,” Bassett wrote in a tribute to Butler as part Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2023. “So, I  took his hand and held it softly as the winner was announced. Although his name wasn’t called, Austin is no less a winner. The time had come for Austin to say goodbye to Elvis as he began to embrace an infinite universe of possibilities as an actor. I can’t wait to see what he brings us next.”
