Keeping your mental health in check is hugely important for a long and happy life, although it is not as straightforward as physical fitness, which requires exercise.
There are, however, daily practices that you can take part in to make sure that your brain stays sharp, and it's a lot more simple and easy than many may think.
TV doctor Michael Mosely revealed on his podcast - Just One Thing - that a simple daily practice could help reduce the risks of brain decline and could even help improve our brain functions.
The practice in question is meditation and mindfulness with the doctor suggesting people give it a try, reports the Express. Dr Mosely even says that you may see improvements in a matter of weeks after just 10 minutes of meditation each day.
Speaking about the practice on his podcast, he said: “Meditation can have a remarkable effect on the brain when done regularly. It can improve working memory, and even change the structure and function of our brains.
“Research has shown that regular meditation could even be a way to counteract age-related decline in the brain.”
What’s more, the doctor shared you don't need to be an expert meditator to enjoy these benefits. A guest on the podcast, Dr Sara Lazar, an associate professor in psychology at Harvard Medical School, explained how to practise mindful meditation.
Dr Lazar said: “Mindfulness is often defined as present moment awareness of experience in this open, curious non-judgmental way. And you can be mindful anytime, anywhere, 24/7.
