A Metropolitan Police officer has been convicted after attempting to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex while on duty.
Detective Constable Francois Olwage has today (April 14) been found guilty at Winchester Crown Court of three child sex offences. The jury was told how the 52-year-old, from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, spoke to the 'girl' in an online chat room for two weeks before trying to meet her.
Olwage was unaware that he had in fact been speaking to an undercover police officer who had been calling themselves ‘Smile Bear’ and ‘Caitlin’. He took the train to meet her last October while 'on duty working from home', the court heard.

The officer was later arrested at a McDonald's in Hampshire. The court was told how police found condoms, a bottle of lubricant and a packet of erectile dysfunction tablets in his bag.
There was also a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates which prosecutors suggested was a present for the ‘girl’. Olwage told the court that he ‘never believed’ Smile Bear was a 13-year-old girl and that he thought it was an adult 'playing out a fantasy'.
A jury at Winchester Crown Court found him guilty of three child sex offences. He will now be remanded in custody until April 27, when he will be sentenced.
