Haggis, the Oscar-winning director of “Crash” and screenwriter of “Million Dollar Baby,” has been accused of raping a publicist named Haleigh Breest after a movie premiere nearly a decade ago. Breest’s lawsuit was filed in 2017 in the wake of the #MeToo movement, which led to an influx of sexual assault allegations against prominent men. Haggis has claimed the encounter, which took place in 2013, was consensual and maintains the rape charge came in retaliation for his decision to leave and then criticize the Church of Scientology. Prior to the trial, Breest’s attorneys sought to block Haggis from arguing that Scientology was orchestrating the allegations in retaliation, saying that Breest and other witnesses have no connection to the church. They also argued that pursuing that line of defense will distract the jury from the particulars of Breest’s allegations. But in September, Judge Sabrina Kraus ruled that Haggis will be able to use that argument.

An Ohio cosplayer pleaded guilty Wednesday to planting a bomb at a perceived romantic rival’s house in Maryland, which nearly killed the recipient and caused more than $45,000 in damage to the home. Clayton Alexander McCoy, a 32-year-old registered sex offender who lived with his mother, drove more than 350 miles on Oct. 30, 2020 in order to plant a package bomb on the victim’s front porch, according to a federal criminal complaint.

Actor Cuba Gooding Jr.'s criminal record has been wiped clean. After completing the terms of his no-jail plea deal in his Manhattan sex abuse case, the "Jerry Maguire" star had his charge downgraded Thursday to second-degree harassment for kissing a woman against her will at a nightclub in 2018. Prosecutor Coleen Balbert said Thursday Gooding had completed six months of alcohol and behavior modification counseling, allowing him to withdraw his misdemeanor plea and plead guilty to a harassment violation.  Balbert said she has received "positive reports for the last six months" from Gooding’s therapist.

A 14-year-old girl was arrested in Maryland for allegedly pulling a knife during a caught-on-camera school lunchroom brawl.  Video showed the girl drawing what authorities said was a large 8-to-10-inch kitchen knife during a fight inside the cafeteria at Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Maryland, on Friday.  According to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, School Resource Officer Deputy 1st Class Dustin Turner witnessed two girls fighting in the lunchroom and immediately intervened when one was seen holding the knife in a "threatening manner."  Girl, 14, pulls large knife at Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Maryland.
