Council Tax bills for 2023/24 have now been issued, but certain groups of people may not be aware they could be due a hefty discount and possible refund, which could help to offset soaring food prices and the upcoming rise to energy bills - due to the loss of he £66/£67 monthly rebate which ends this month.
Martin shared success stories of three couples who had been in the wrong Council Tax band for years and all received more than £7,300 each in refunds. But he also explained how single people, students, carers and disabled people may be eligible for a discount.
He explained: “The other way to cut on Council Tax is there are discounts, the big one is the single person discount if you live alone or if you live with children or full time students. Students can get a discount, those on low income may be eligible for a discount, those with disabilities, those with a severe mental impairment such as dementia, as can carers.”
Martin urged everyone in the audience and watching at home: “If you’re in any of those categories, I’m not saying you will get a discount, but you should certainly check out if you are eligible for a discount.”
