With its heartwarming declarations of love and dramatic shock romances, it’s no surprise that viewers up and down the country are captivated by this year’s Married At First Sight UK. But while fans at home may be used to watching the newlyweds embark on a series of weekly dinner parties and commitment ceremonies, all while living in the same apartment block, the show used to look very different. In fact, it wasn’t until 2021 that all of these additions were added in a revamp of the format in order to make it more like the Australian version.
But despite the show’s similarity with its Australian counterpart, a US version of MAFS exists and it's very different indeed. Let’s take a peek why… Auditions Unlike the UK version of the show, the US version allows viewers to watch the audition process. Rather than jumping into the contestants’ life stories, the show kickstarts with a series of potential singletons fighting for their spot on the show.
As part of this, all potential stars are sat in an auditorium where the experts talk them through what the show is about. Similarly, while the Australian version sees 12 couples say ‘I Do’, the most recent US version only saw five. Ceremonies A key part of Married At First Sight is that the couples, well, marry at first sight.
However, US contestants are allowed to exchange a gift before their nuptials, giving them some insight into who exactly they’re marrying. In addition to writing a card, gifts such as jewellery, socks and sweet treats are sent as a pre-wedding present. What’s more, friends and families of those involved are also the people to write the vows for the bride and groom.
