Manchester United are set to face Liverpool in their final game of the campaign in their quest to lay their claim on the Women’s Super League title for the first time in club history.
The Reds have had their most successful season in the top-tier with 17 wins, two draws and two losses in 21 games - seeing them occupy second place in the league rankings, two points behind reigning champions Chelsea.
Marc Skinner’s side need all three points - and for the Blues to lose against Reading, a side who are fighting tooth and nail to stay in the top tier - to win.
As title contention and relegation battle goes down to the wire Skinner said: “We know that if Chelsea, draw we need a massive goal swing. Is that realistic? We're going to try, of course.”
Should it come to a tie at the Madejski Stadium, United need to net five goals plus one more than however many Chelsea score in their game to get their hands on some silverware, Skinner continued: “We need two really great swings to go for us.”
To keep tabs on the title race, United backroom staff will have 'in-ear comms' while the team focus on beating a side that has defeated WSL giants in their return to top-flight football.
Liverpool are seventh in the league standings and come from a three-a-piece tie with Aston Villa last week, while United come into the game from a 2-1 last-minute drama over Manchester City.
It's a clash that Skinner believes will be a tough feat, despite the six-nil thrashing United served back in January: “I look at Matt [Beard] and I admire him. He builds together teams and they fight for each other and that's always dangerous because that sometimes goes beyond tactics.
