Manchester United have 'opened the door' to sign wantaway France winger Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona - according to reports.
Having finished as runners-up to Manchester City in the Premier League last season, key figures in the Old Trafford boardroom issued a triple statement of intent; signing Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and returning five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
United missed out on a top-level defensive midfielder at that stage.
Manchester Evening News understands that has been identified as a priority for the next two windows and Declan Rice is still viewed as target number one in that regard.
Amadou Haidara, Boubacar Kamara, Denis Zakaria and Ruben Neves from Wolves have also been earmarked.
However, they continue to be linked with swoops in attacking quarters, too, after Barcelona issued a major update on former United target Dembele and his future this morning. He appears set to leave the Nou Camp this month as the Old Trafford giants revive their interest.
Before that announcement, Sport - as per this article - claimed United would be willing to sign Dembele on a free transfer next summer when his Barcelona contract expires. It's unclear what fee the Catalans are demanding.
According to the same report, his representatives met with United figures regularly over the last two years and came close to signing him on loan at one point. Dembele cost Barcelona a staggering €140million from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
Elsewhere, reports from The Mirror suggest Dean Henderson has performed a transfer u-turn this January.
The 24-year-old displaced David de Gea between the posts at Old Trafford last season but, due to Covid-19 and an upturn in form from his long-serving colleague, England stopper
