Manchester’s first life-saving ‘bleed safety cabinet’ has been installed in south Manchester.
The cabinet was installed at The Place Library in Fallowfield on Saturday February 12 in memory of 16 year-old Rhamero West.
It is for public use in the event of a stabbing or other incident which causes blood loss.
It was unveiled by the family of Rhamero, who died after he was stabbed in September last year.
The kit is personalised with an image of Rhamero and includes the phrase: "Enough is enough, put down the knives.
“Save our kids' lives".
It contains instructions on how to help should someone be bleeding heavily and includes equipment to help stem blood flow during the wait for paramedics to arrive.
A foundation, Mero's World, has been set up in memory of Rhamero and his family continues to fundraise for more bleed safety cabinets.
Rhamero was stabbed in Trafford on September 9 2021 and died shortly after arriving at hospital.
Deanne Brown, Rhamero’s cousin, has since been working to raise awareness of knife crime in the community and was an integral part of the fundraising effort for the bleed safety cabinets.
She said: “We initially raised the first £600 for the first kit that was put in Fallowfield and then we did a celebration day at the library and managed to get more funding for the second one that we want to put in Old Trafford.
“We’re hoping to put it at the Tesco on Upper Chorlton Road.
“I’m also leaving my job tomorrow, and because I’ve been there for seven years, the three separate businesses: Bright HR, Peninsula and Health Assured, as a thank you from them, they’ve donated a further three cabinets.
“The next three we are securing will be in Hulme, Moss Side and Rusholme.”
