Mikel Arteta has said that Bukayo Saka is close to signing a new contract at Arsenal, dealing a potential blow to Manchester City's transfer plans.
The 20-year-old winger has been linked with City in recent weeks, with the Blues reportedly eyeing him up as a potential successor to Raheem Sterling. Saka was set to enter the final two years of his Arsenal contract, prompting clubs to believe that they could sign him for a knockdown fee.
Anxiety was building at Arsenal that he might decide to seek a move, but speaking after his side's pre-season defeat of Everton on Sunday, Arteta revealed that the England star is set to stay.

"We will try and we both have the same intention and it’s a matter of time," Arteta said.
Following the sales of Sterling and Gabriel Jesus to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively, City are a little short in options on the right flank. Riyad Mahrez — who penned a two-year-contract extension on Friday to keep him at the club until 2025 — and Cole Palmer look set to be the main options, with Julian Alvarez also capable of playing out wide.
Last season City witnessed Saka's quality first-hand, when the Arsenal number seven swept home a superb strike to give his side the lead at the Emirates Stadium on New Year's Day. In many ways Saka could have been the ideal Sterling replacement, but instead Arsenal and former City assistant manager Arteta appear to have dealt City a third transfer blow in as many weeks.
