Man, 44, arrested on suspicion of threats to destroy property after homes evacuated amid 'gas leak' fears

A man has been arrested after homes on a street were evacuated amid fears of a gas leak. Fire crews, police and paramedics attended Petersburg Road in Edgeley, Stockport, at around 11am on Friday morning.
The Manchester Evening Newsunderstands a number of properties and residents were evacuated. A cordon was put in place at the scene.
One resident told the M.E.N. they were told they needed to evacuate their homes. Sean Passant, one of the evacuated residents, said fire officers at the scene told him the incident was a suspected gas leak.

"It's always a bit worrying when you see fire engines and police cars outside your house,” he added. Another resident said homes were evacuated for around 40 minutes.
It's understood the cordon was lifted and residents were allowed back to their homes at around 1.40pm. Police have now confirmed a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of threats to destroy or damage property.
He remained in custody for questioning on Friday afternoon. No further details have been revealed. The man hasn't been identified.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called to an incident on Petersburg Road, Edgeley, at around 11am on Friday 19 August 2022.
"A 44-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of threats to destroy or damage property."
