The Lyons crime clan has been hit by the death of a senior family member.
Garage owner David Lyons yesterday died in hospital hours after falling outside his home. The 63-year-old is believed to have suffered a fatal heart attack, which is suspected to have been triggered by a serious head injury.
Lyons was found outside his home in Cumbernauld, near Glasgow, shortly after midnight on Saturday. It’s reported that the grandad was lying outside for almost an hour before being discovered. Sources said last night family members called 999 for an ambulance several times before ferrying Lyons to Monklands General Hospital A&E in Airdrie themselves.
A hospital insider last night said around 60 people visited his bedside before Lyons lost his fight for life. His son Paul Lyons – who is serving a prison sentence for a road rage killing – was escorted from jail to say his final goodbyes.
A source said: “Everyone in the Lyons family looked up to David. His sudden death has left them shattered.”
Lyons was boss of Applerow Motors, in Possil, Glasgow. In 2006, hitmen Raymond Anderson and James McDonald walked on to the site and started shooting at members of the Lyons family.
Michael Lyons was shot dead but crime boss Steven Lyons and gangster Robert Pickett survived. Anderson and McDonald were found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow in 2008 and each jailed for a record 35 years.
