The Oscar-nominated hair department head, whose credits include “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” experimented with adding color into Lupita Nyong’o’s hair, and now she’s doing it again. This time, it was for Halle Bailey in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid.” But doing so didn’t come cheap. Her challenge was taking Disney’s most famous redhead, Princess Ariel, and creating a look for Bailey that would work. On top of that, maintaining Bailey’s natural hair was an important requirement she needed to meet. Bailey, who sports long locs, wanted to stay true to her Black heritage. And maintaining them without a wig would herald an important moment for representation and Bailey’s identity, as the movie presents Disney’s first Black Ariel (and first Black princess in a live-action movie.)

A source confirms that the request was filed with the WGA earlier this week. If the waiver is not granted, the televised ceremony – set for June 11 — will probably be canceled because presenters and nominees are unlikely to cross picket lines. Ariana DeBose is set to return as host but it is believed she’ll cancel if the strike is still on. The Tonys are scheduled to take place at the United Palace in New York’s Washington Heights. The ceremony starts at 8 p.m. ET and air live on CBS, as well as the streaming service Paramount+.

Selome Hailu Netflix’s dark comedy “Beef” made its debut on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings in the No. 4 position with 962 million minutes watched. This measurement was taken during the April 3-9 viewing window, and “Beef” premiered on April 6, meaning the series achieved that viewership in its first four days of availability. Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the first season of “Beef” is 10 episodes long. The series was originally billed as a comedy, but Variety exclusively reported it would campaign for Emmys in the limited series category. There’s still a chance the project will return, as creator Lee Sung Jin has said he has ideas for as many as three seasons. It should be noted, though, that “Beef” has since become embroiled in a scandal surrounding supporting actor David Choe and a story he told in a 2014 podcast about committing rape, which he and later his collaborators said was “fabricated.”
