Love Island may focus on a handful of singletons as they attempt to find true romance, but over the years the popular ITV2 show has become known for its catchphrases. From finding your ‘type on paper’ to "lets chat, hun", iconic slogans and Love Island go hand in hand.
And this season, it seems that an unlikely catchphrase has made its way into the villa. On Wednesday’s show, viewers were given a glimpse inside the blossoming friendship between Amber Beckford and Indiyah Polack as the Islanders got ready for bed after their Shimmer and Shine party.
As the two changed out of their evening clothes, they could be seen shouting “Too hot! Too spicy! Owwww!” in the girls’ dressing room as the others laughed and cheered. Though the phrase may have left fellow Islander Luca Bish confused, it turns out that Amber, 24, and Indiyah, 23, were referencing a very iconic phrase indeed.
The slogan comes from a 2009 advert for fast food franchise Subway in which the chain was advertising its Reggae Reggae Chicken Breast Sub. As part of the advert, an actor can be seen turning down some jalapenos as a topping before being confronted by a man dressed up as a green chilli pepper. The green chilli pepper then bursts out into somewhat of a song and says: “Oooh mama.Too hot! Too spicy! Hot hot!” - just like Amber and Indiyah.
Amber and Indiyah’s lighthearted impersonation came as Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu made a beeline for newcomer Jay Younger, who’d entered the villa as a bombshell alongside Remi Lambert on Tuesday’s episode.
