America Ferrera turns 40 - how Barbie actress went from humble beginnings to Oscar nomination

When America Ferrera heard she had been nominated for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Academy Awards, for her role as Gloria in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie, she couldn’t believe it at first. "There was a moment where I wasn’t sure if I had made it up," America admitted. "And then my phone started blowing up so I figured that I must have heard it right." Three of those people calling were her co-stars in one of her early movies, The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants, made back in 2005 – Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel. The trio all jumped on a group video call to congratulate their friend.

‘Barbie’s America Ferrera, On Catching The Pink Wave And Making Her Directorial Debut ‘I’m Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter’

By her own admission, America Ferrera was not a Barbie girl growing up. But now, two decades into her career, Ferrera will be forever bathed in the warm pink glow of the Mattel brand thanks to her role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Ferrera plays a central role as Gloria, a Mattel employee dealing with an existential crisis in the real world, that sends a ripple into Barbie Land and awakens Margot Robbie’s stereotypical Barbie. After Barbie’s female utopia falls prey to a patriarchal coup spearheaded by Ryan Gosling’s Ken, Gloria steps in to set things right. Here, Ferrera reflects on womanhood, her career and making her directorial debut.

Werner Herzog, Who Recorded the Audio Version of His Memoir, Insists His Words Will Outlive His Movies

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic Werner Herzog has traveled to the ends of the earth for his art, rolling cameras in places rarely seen by human eyes — from rapids along the Amazon River for 1972’s “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” to the rim of an active volcano in Antarctica. But what’s inside Herzog’s head is what fascinates fans of the German director. As revealed in a new memoir, “Every Man for Himself and God Against All” (the phrase served as the original title of his 1974 film “The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser”), Herzog’s far-ranging filmography represents only a fraction of the encounters and adventures that have shaped his worldview.

For the Love of Theme Parks

I did not spend a lot of my youth traveling. I didn’t fly in an airplane until I was 20 (aside from a vague memory of flying to upstate New York to visit family when I was small enough to worry about having to put my baby doll on through the security scanner). I ventured beyond the east coast for the first time last year on a trip to Colorado. I went on some Spring Break trips to South Carolina beaches and North Georgia mountains with my friends in high school, but the only vacations my family took were to visit my grandparents in Daytona Beach, Florida.
