A popular spy thriller with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score has been renewed for a fifth season on Apple TV.

K.J. Yossman Gary Oldman’s band of MI5 misfits are set to return for another outing. “Slow Horses,” the hit Apple TV+ series based on Mick Herron’s spy series of the same name, has been renewed for a fifth season, Variety can confirm.

Apple TV+ is returning once again to Slow Horses, with a fifth season greenlit, the first major renewal of 2024.

Slow Horses is “a huge step up in terms of the scale and the level of action” fans can expect to see from the new season, according to the show’s showrunner, executive producer and writer, Will Smith.Smith, who also wrote for The Thick Of It and Veep, told NME ahead of season three’s release that despite the increased action, it was still important that Slow Horses “felt like the same show” and that it “didn’t suddenly go off into feeling like it was just generic action.” He continued: “We still felt like it was our characters involved in it, and it still had the humour and the drama: it still felt like our show.”The group of disgraced MI5 rejects are back in a new series which sees the addition of Gangs of London star Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, whose partner is killed in mysterious circumstances while both are working for MI5. “Oh I love Ṣọpẹ́, he’s an amazing actor,” Smith says.

The second season premieres globally on the streaming service Dec. 2 with the first two episodes, followed by one new episode each week after that for the duration of the six-episode season. And if there’s any confirmation of what fans can anticipate from Season 2, it’s that “more people are going to die,” according to a voice-over in the trailer from returning star Jack Lowden. In the new season of “Slow Horses” (which is adapted from Mick Herron’s sequel novel “Dead Lion”), when exposure of previously-concealed Cold War secrets creates tension between Russia and Britain, the spies are again tasked with protecting society from inevitable catastrophe. Stars from Season 1 have returned for the production of the upcoming release, including Academy-Award winner Oldman as Jackson Lamb, Lowden as River Cartwright, Kristin Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner, Saskia Reeves as Catherine Standish and many more.

Apple TV’s six-part mini-series Slow Horses, adapted from the novels of the same name by Mick Herron, landed on 1 April with a one-two punch and promptly kept viewers waiting, having decided to parse out the remaining four episodes out on a weekly basis. “It was Apple’s decision,” says director James Hawes. “But if the response I’ve had is anything to go by, the anticipation it has created is fantastic. I’ve got people ringing me up to say, ‘Why are you doing this? I wanted to finish it over the weekend!’ The greatest compliment you could have is that people are demanding more—and now.”
