Mo Amer on Making His Palestinian Refugee Comedy ‘Mo’ and Highlighting Houston with Bun B

Selome Hailu SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you haven’t watched Season 1 of “Mo” on Netflix. As I finish interviewing comedian Mo Amer and ask him if there’s anything else he’d like to talk about, he says, “I don’t have a lean addiction, nor have I ever been addicted to lean. I keep saying that every chance I can, because it gets weird out here.” It’s an important distinction to make, as the mixture of prescription cough syrup, soda and candy has killed many, especially in Houston, where Amer grew up. He is the co-creator, executive producer and star of “Mo,” a comedy-drama series that heavily draws from his true experiences as a refugee — his parents were displaced from Palestine to Kuwait where Amer was born, before the whole family fled to Texas during the Gulf War. Several of the show’s most painful moments — like when, 20 years after his father’s death from a heart attack, is looking over paperwork with his immigration lawyer (Lee Eddy) and finds out for the first time that his father was captured and tortured during the war — are lifted directly from Amer’s life. But when Mo begins sipping lean to cope with an injury he sustains in Episode 1 — Amer says that’s all for the plot.

'Apocalyptic' dust storm that will stop you breathing could hit the UK in two weeks

apocalyptic dust cloud, so thick it can choke you, has taken over parts of the Middle East – and it could hit the UK next week.Parts of Syria, Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are currently caked in a deep orange dust cloud. The Gulf states have been experiencing the weather system since April, which even saw the sand-filled winds hit UK shores. The Saharan dust cloud created a “blood rain” effect in London, and left UK streets covered in dust but this time, it appears to be much worse.Hospitals in Syria have been treating numerous patients who are unable to breathe due to inhaling the dust, while most Gulf states declared a state of emergency two weeks ago.And Muge Akpinar-Elci, dean of the school of public health at the University of Nevada told The Guardian: “It is very concerning.“Dust storms do not just impact one country or specific location in the world and can have far-reaching consequences globally.”According to weather service Accuweather, the UK will experience level eight UV rays on the UV index from Saturday, June 18 – which is rated as “unhealthy”.It is set to last for three days, until Monday, June 20.This is the same rating London had when the “blood rain” hit the country last month – and could be a sign that the deadly dust clouds are coming our way.Syria's healthy ministry spokesman, Seif al-Bard confirmed that three people had died from the dust in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor, and he issued an ominous warning to the rest of the world. He said: “The impact of dust storms exceeds regional and continental boundaries.“So this is not somebody else’s problem, this is everyone’s problem.”In May, a Met Office spokesman said: “Each year on several occasions the UK will see rain

David Beckham slammed by gay magazine after multi-million pound Qatar World Cup deal

David Beckham has been given the red card by a gay magazine over his multi-million-pound deal to be the face of the Qatar World Cup. Attitude magazine has accused the ex-England skipper of an own goal after his support for Blackpool footballer Jake Daniels, who came out as gay earlier this month. The mag said his backing for Daniels, 17, was at odds with his megabucks deal to be an “ambassador” for the Qatari government, which bans homosexuality. When asked about the Blackpool teenager, Becks, 47, said: “It’s a shame that when someone does come out that it’s such a strange thing.“At the end of the day there will be a huge amount of gay people in sports, and why should they be any different from anyone else?”Attitude accused the footie icon of a “hollow response that our community has become accustomed to expect from the mega rich”.The publication said on Instagram: “Beckham asks why gay people in sport should be any different to anyone else.“One reason that David might consider is that in many places around the world queer people are not only marginalised and oppressed but also persecuted.

'Toughest' 12ft 4in shark dubbed 'Ironbound' amazes scientists with return to coastline

great white shark known as Ironbound has amazed scientists by going to the same area of coastline each year. The 12ft 4ins long apex predator has been tracked for three years by Ocearch which is notified every time Ironbound breaks the water's surface on North America's Atlantic coast. At 450kg, researchers have described him as one of the "toughest sharks" they have come across, "especially considering his size".Thanks to a harmless tag on Ironbound, Ocearch has been able to learn all about the beast's movements which recently caused a scare as he ventured close to popular US beaches.Keeping an eye on Ironbound, Ocearch's chief scientist told CNN earlier this month that he thinks the shark is ready to bulk up for the next mating season. Bob Hueter said: "Mating season is over, we think, and Ironbound is on his way north to get into some good feeding ground and bulk up again for the next year."It appears Bob was right on the money with his prediction as Ironbound's latest ping on Thursday (May 26) was back in Nova Scotia, Canada where he was first tagged in October 2019.In April Ironbound came scarily close to a sandy beach in North Carolina having been as far south as the Gulf of Mexico.
