Berlinale Calls for Acquittal of Zimbabwean Filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga – Global Bulletin

Naman Ramachandran The Berlin International Film Festival has called for the acquittal of Zimbabwean author and filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga (“I Want a Wedding Dress”) who served on the international jury of the festival earlier this year. Dangarembga was arrested in July 2020 at a protest in Harare along with journalist Julie Barnes, where both were calling for the release of journalists and for institutional reforms.They are being charged with inciting public violence, disturbing the peace and bigotry, and with violations of COVID regulations. The women have since been released on bail, but they have also been subpoenaed 26 times.

London and UK cities could run out of water 'in 25 years' amid severe drought warning

Cities around the world, including the UK and its capital, could run out of water 'in 25 years' because of growing risks from drought driven by climate change, according to a report from Christian Aid. Severe droughts in London and the South East of England, in the “famously rainy UK”, could cost the capital’s economy £330 million a day, it says.

LONDON -- A Zimbabwean writer who was arrested during anti-government protests is among six finalists announced Tuesday for the prestigious Booker Prize for fiction.Tsitsi Dangarembga was nominated for the 50,000-pound ($63,000) award for “This Mournable Body,” which links the breakdown of its central character and turmoil in post-colonial Zimbabwe.Dangarembga was arrested in July and spent a night in detention for standing by a Harare road and holding up a placard that said “We Want Better.
