Lloyd Price, who soared to the top of the charts with the 1950s hits Lawdy Miss Clawdy, Personality and Stagger Lee, died Monday in New Orleans. He was 88 and no cause was given by his manager, who confirmed the death.
Price was discovered at age 19 by legendary New Orleans producer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Bartholomew, who was working with Specialty Records producer Art Rupe. He took Price in and soon recorded Lawdy Miss Clawdy, with Fats Domino on piano and Earl Palmer on drums. The

NEW YORK -- Singer-songwriter Lloyd Price, an early rock ’n roll star and enduring maverick whose hits included such up-tempo favorites as “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” “Personality” and the semi-forbidden “Stagger Lee,” has died.
Billboard on Saturday that the singer behind hits such as Personality, Lawdy Miss Clawdy and Stagger Lee died at a New Rochelle, New York elder care facility on May 3. 'Lloyd’s music crossed many boundaries and carried him to all corners of the world,' Price said.
Lloyd Price was one of the great R&B stars of the 1950s and ‘60s, known for hits including “Personality” and “Lawdy Miss Clawdy.”Price was still a teen when he recorded his first hit, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” in 1952. Written by Price and recorded with Fats Domino (1928–2017) on piano, it became an R&B hit and was one of the legendary tracks that helped lay the groundwork for the development of rock and roll.
Little Richard in 1993 convinced him to join the Oldies circuit. Not that Price needed to work – Elvis Presley, Little Richard and the Beatles all had recorded Lawdy Miss Clawdy while Stagger Lee and Personality feature regularly on film and television soundtracks.
