Elton John has been awarded the National Humanities Medal by US president Joe Biden.The British icon was awarded the medal at the White House as part of an event titled ‘A Night When Hope and History Rhyme’ – which celebrated teachers, students, frontline workers, and LGBTQIA advocates. Over 2,000 people were in attendance, with notable attendees including former first lady Laura Bush, education activist Malala Yousafzai as well as AIDS activist Jeanne White-Ginder.At the event, John played a slew of his hits, including ‘Your Song,’ ‘Rocket Man’ ‘Tiny Dancer’, and ‘Crocodile Rock’, a song personally important to President Biden.

Joe Biden offered his personal recollections of Queen Elizabeth as “decent, honorable and all about service,” while he said that he consoled King Charles by telling him that “she’s going to be with him every step of the way — every minute, every moment.”

Thania Garcia Although the royal family has yet to confirm the official list of attendees for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, various heads of state have already confirmed their planned attendance at the Westminster Abbey ceremony scheduled for Monday, Sept. 19. Buckingham Palace revealed the full schedule of the funeral plans — which will begin in London and end in Windsor — including the several categories of dignitaries invited: global government representatives, foreign royal families, governors general, realm prime ministers and heads of state. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will be present, along with all of the heads of the Commonwealth including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Indian President Droupadi Murmu and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Joining them will be President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska and the presidents of Austria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy and Poland, among other representatives.

Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden paid their respects to the Queen as she lies in state in Westminster Hall.The US President, 79, and his wife arrived at the venue on Sunday evening and after spending some time witnessing the Queen’s coffin, they travelled to Lancaster House to sign the book of condolences. During the signing, Joe explained why the late Queen reminded him of his own mother: “She had that look like, ‘are you OK? Anything I can do for you? What do you need?’ “And also ‘make sure you do what you’re supposed to do’,” he joked, wagging his finger.

The King and Queen Consort hosted world leaders and official overseas guests at Buckingham Palace on Sunday 18 September. His Majesty, 73, and Camilla, 75, were also joined at the event by Kate Middleton and Prince William in what the King’s spokesman described as an “official state event”.
