Paris Saint-Germain forward and Argentina captain Lionel Messi scored his 100th international goal to enter an exclusive club alongside former Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday night.
Messi's tally for Argentina stood at 98 before the recent international friendlies against Panama and Curacao. The 35-year-old scored once vs Panama in a 2-0 victory, leaving him agonisingly close to the 100 club.
However, his hat-trick against a comfortably second-best Curacao side took him to 102 goals on the international stage. Only retired Iranian forward Ali Daei, who scored 109 goals, and Ronaldo sit above him in the list of all-time international goalscorers.

United's ex-star added another four goals to his tally during the break as he reached a whopping 122 goals for Portugal. And, while he did admit to considering retirement after Portugal's World Cup defeat to Morocco, the former United striker is expected to continue playing for his nation potentially up to Euro 2024.
Manchester City's and United's interest in the Argentina clash ended up being limited after Julian Alvarez and Lisandro Martinez watched from the bench as Messi reached his milestone. Nicolas Gonzalez, Enzo Fernandez, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Montiel were also on target as the South Americans completed a comprehensive 7-0 rout.
Messi's future beyond the 2022/23 season is currently up in the air. The 35-year-old's contract in the French capital expires at the end of the season and it is not yet clear whether he will sign an extension.
It is understood that Phil Neville and David Beckham's MLS side Inter Miami are interested in signing Messi should he become available.
