Lin-Manuel Miranda Talks Jonathan Larson’s Story In ‘Tick, Tick … Boom!’: ‘It’s About Failure’

Jonathan Larson died suddenly in January 1996, on the morning before his musical Rent played its first off-Broadway preview performance. A few months later, Rent would begin a 12-year run on Broadway and become one of the most successful musicals of all time.

Broadway’s Freestyle Love Supreme offered up some bad news-good news today, with the improvisational hip-hop revue canceling tonight’s performance due to Covid (the bad news) but revealing four previously unannounced appearances by co-creator Lin-Manuel Miranda for this week (the good news).
