As food prices continue to soar, shoppers across the country have been taken a closer look at prices when they are in supermarkets to help keep costs down.
And supermarket shoppers have been left reeling at the eye-watering price of one piece of fruit in particular, with one saying the purchase left them feeling like they had been 'robbed'.
One Lidl shopper thought the cost of their watermelon - that weighed 3.5kg - initially cost a budget-friendly £1.19. However, it was only after checking their receipt when they got home they found it actually cost almost a fiver.
The Manchester Evening News reports that the shopper had actually been charged £4.20 for just the one watermelon, as the budget supermarket had charged them per kg for the purchase. Sharing her dismay in a money-saving Facebook page, the shopper said: "I feel like I’ve been robbed - £4.20 for a watermelon in Lidl today.
"My partner thought it was £1.19 (obviously didn’t look at the actual price by weight). He could eat a watermelon in a day…. It’s staying as a decoration for that price!!!"
Dozens of people commented on the post, with many saying that Lidl was one of few retailers selling the fruit by weight. Others said they too had fallen victim after not reading the per kg signs properly. "I have been caught out in Lidl before on other fresh produce, a pumpkin, charging by weight not by item," said one. "As it was a big shop I didn't realise until I got home, never again."
"I did this too, didn’t read sign properly and it cost me just under a fiver," said another.
Some shoppers said the price of melon has shot up everywhere, with one sharing a photo they took of Asda's watermelons priced at £7 each and another saying they'd seen them for £6.99 in Costco.
