Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has responded to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem after the seven-time world champion was criticised for his activism by the former rally driver. Ben Sulayem previously said that motorsport was "too political" but Hamilton insisted ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that he won't stop fighting for social causes. Ben Sulayem clarified his views on Twitter.
"As a driver, I have always believed in sport as a catalyst of progress in society," the first-year FIA chief said. "That is why promoting sustainability, diversity and inclusion is a key priority of my mandate. In the same way, I value the commitment of all drivers and champions for a better future.
"Ben Sulayem was clarifying the views he gave in an interview with GrandPrix247. "Niki Lauda and Alain Prost only cared about driving," the 60-year-old said. "Now, [Sebastian] Vettel drives a rainbow bicycle, Lewis is passionate about human rights and [Lando] Norris addresses mental health.
Everybody has the right to think. To me, it is about deciding whether we should impose our beliefs in something over the sport all the time. "I am from an Arabian culture.
I am international and Muslim. I do not impose my beliefs on other people? No way. Never.
If you look at my operation in the UAE - 16 nationalities. Name me one federation that has that many nationalities. "Speaking ahead of the first practice session in Baku, Hamilton admitted: "I only heard about it this morning, I've not read it, so I don't really know all that has been said.
"I'm also aware that sometimes things I've said have been taken out of context, so I want to give that. . .

Formula One three-time world champion Nelson Piquet has been condemned for using racially abusive language towards Lewis Hamilton, with the majority of the current grid speaking out in his defence. Whilst referring to the seven-time world champion, Piquet used a racially abusive term in a derogatory way when analysing the crash between him and Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix last year. The fact that this interview is only just being picked up in the main stream media and being acted on highlights a major problem in itself.
Lewis Hamilton has spoken out for the first time on shocking footage which appeared to show three-time F1 world champion Nelson Piquet using a racial slur when describing his clash with Max Verstappen at Silverstone in 2021. The Brazilian has been widely condemned by the F1 community for using the term 'neguinho' while discussing Hamilton, who is an avid campaigner for racial equality. Hamilton and Verstappen came together at Copse Corner in 2021, producing one of the defining moments of last season's epic title battle between the pair.

Mercedes ace Hamilton collided with his Red Bull rival during the opening lap of the British Grand Prix last July as Verstappen went veering off the track at high speed at the infamous Copse corner.
Lewis Hamilton has received a message of support from Manchester United defender Raphael Varane after three-time F1 world champion Nelson Piquet used a racist term to describe the Mercedes ace during an interview. Piquet made his comments last November as he spoke about Hamilton's clash with Max Verstappen at the Silverstone Grand Prix. And they were broadcast by Brazilian media on Monday night.
Lewis Hamilton has spoken out saying "archaic mindsets need to change" after three-time former world champion Nelson Piquet referred to him using racist language. The 69-year-old made the racist comments during a Brazilian podcast interview last November where shared his thoughts on a crash in the opening lap involving the seven-time champion with rival Max Verstappen at last year's Silverstone race. In the end, Verstappen didn't finish the race as a result after he spun out and crashed into a barrier while Hamilton went on to win the Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton has opened up on the terrifying nature of his Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which was plagued by porpoising on Baku's rough street circuit. The Briton struggled with back pain throughout, and had to cope with fears that the car would veer into the wall at high speed, which he described as a 'very strange experience'. Even before Sunday's race, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was outspoken about the fact that Baku's bumpy circuit was not well suited to the cars driven by Hamilton and George Russell.
