Mariah Carey has been sued for $20m (£16m) after being asccused of copying hit song “All I Want for Christmas is You”. The singer and her co-songwriter Walter Afansieff have been named in the lawsuit, which has been filed by Andy Stone. Stone, in legal documents filed at the US District Court in the Eastern District of Louisiana, claims that their song was taken from one with the same name he co-wrote for Vince Vance & the Valiants in 1989.

In a complaint filed in New Orleans federal court, Andy Stone is seeking at least $20 million in damages from Carey, her co-writer and Sony Music Entertainment for copyright infringement and misappropriation, among other claims. Stone, who performs as Vince Vance with the country-pop band Vince Vance & the Valiants, accused the defendants of having illegally exploited his "popularity and unique style" and caused confusion by recording the newer song without his permission.

Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, isn’t having a very merry start to the summer. In documents acquired by The Post, Andy Stone, who co-wrote Vince Vance & The Valiants’ country song “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” is suing Carey for copyright infringement — claiming the diva never sought or obtained use of his title for her perennial monster holiday hit. Stone is also coming after Carey’s co-writer on the song, Walter Afanasieff, in the civil suit, which was filed in the United States District Court of the Eastern District of Louisiana.Stone released his 1989 twangy version — which musically and lyrically sounds nothing like Carey’s pop performance — eight years before Carey changed the holiday season forever in 1994.
