The sudden rise in cases in the town is thought to be driven by the B.1.617.2 strain of the virus, often called the Indian variant.
Week-on-week cases have more than doubled in Bolton, according to Public Health England figures.
In the week to May 9, there were 553 positive tests - 309 more than the previous seven days.
