Latest Greater Manchester coronavirus infection rates as cases continue to nosedive

Coronavirus infection rates are continuing to nosedive in all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. Wigan continues to have the highest rate in the region.
The borough recorded an infection rate of 121.9 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending May 1, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency. It means it is the only borough in Greater Manchester where the rate is higher than the national average.
The rate in the other nine is lower than the national average. The lowest infection rate is in Manchester, where it stands at 81.7 cases per 100,000 people.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 99.1 cases per 100,000 population. The infection rate in the region is lower than the national average, which is 116.8 cases per 100,000 people.
A total of 2,809 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on May 1. The Greater Manchester weekly total has decreased by 1,636 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was down 37 per cent in the last week.
In the week ending on May 1, a total of 373 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 49 fewer than the week before, a fall of 15pc.
On Tuesday May 3, there were 17 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is the same as a week earlier.
