If you’re a candidate that believes the Democrats stole the election in 2020, John Oliver has it out for you.
The Last Week Tonight host had a field day previewing some of the more interesting Republican secretary of state candidates across the country.
Though the state elections for secretary of state usually fly under the radar of national media – much less the attention of late night television, the position has come under new scrutiny due to its jurisdiction over the process of certifying votes, an issue of concern due to a large contingent of voters who believe that the recent presidential election was improperly counted.
Oliver cherrypicked three candidates, Nevada’s Jim Marchant, New Mexico’s Audrey Trujillo and Michigan’s Kristina Karamo, who all share a degree of the opinion that the 2020 election was improperly handled. The British-American host claimed though these candidates might look like outliers, they represent just the tip of the iceberg.
“These are just three of the worrying candidates for secretary of state around the country. There are many, many others who should frankly give everyone pause because the January 6th committee is reminding everyone just how close we came to democracy basically collapsing,” Oliver said.
Oliver surmised the results of these seemingly unimportant elections might influence the direction democracy is headed for years to come.
“It was a handful of people in the right position choosing to do the right thing that saved us from a constitutional crisis, but there are multiple candidates running for consequential positions right now on the platform of basically ‘let’s do the coup again but better next time,'” Oliver said.
“And if you’re not worried about that… you’re out of your f***ing

Moviegoing is definitely back with viewers flocking to franchise films that 1) continue to roll out in the first sustained barrage of big new titles since Covid, and 2) continue to do huge business as they stick around in theaters. Last Week Tonight yesterday (June 26), Oliver called the decision “absolutely horrifying”, adding: “It is hard to stomach some of the gleeful responses right now. You don’t get a holiday to celebrate the loss of rights for millions of people when you already have one, and it’s called Columbus Day.”The presenter noted: “Even when planned, pregnancy is, best cast scenario, a major medical event that rips open your butt, rips out your organs and then puts them in wrong.”He added: “The idea that you can simply seek another abortion in another state is insulting on its face even before you consider that some lawmakers are already openly looking for ways to punish out-of-state abortions.”Oliver also suggested that the US was now in “uncharted territory” rather than the days before Roe v.

Two members of American rock band Orleans have sued Warner Music over a common gripe in the artist community: record companies allowing their foreign subsidiaries to make deductions on digital income and then calculating the artist royalty based on what is received by the label in the artist’s home country after those deductions. In a lawsuit filed with the courts in Nashville, John Hall and Lance Hoppen criticise the major both for making those international deductions in the first place and for failing to clearly communicate that was happening on their royalty statements. As a result of the bad communication, they add, they’d previously assumed their artist royalty on streams was being calculated based on ‘at-source income’, ie what the major was paid by the streaming service, not what was received by the home label after the foreign subsidiaries had taken their cut.The legal filing, which seeks class action status, says: “Fees to foreign affiliates are a relic of the days when the collection of revenues from foreign record sales entailed significant labour, as opposed to the relatively frictionless methodology by which digital service providers can compensate rightsholders for the use of their services across multiple territories”.“In such instances”, it adds, “the costs of foreign collection are negligible, and the grossly deficient payment of foreign streaming royalties by defendants simply reflects their ability to manipulate their foreign affiliate practices with no commercial justification beyond self-enrichment”.Regarding Warner’s alleged failure to communicate the international deductions, the lawsuit adds: “Defendants purposefully and knowingly withhold and fail to inform plaintiffs and the class members of the
