King Charles gave a telling nod to a song performed at his former wife Princess Diana's funeral as he honoured his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.The new monarch was on our screens tonight in the Blue Drawing Room of Buckingham Palace, where Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth previously recorded some of her messages to the nation. As the televised speech ended, King Charles III said: "May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest".
The lyrics quoted was from Song for Athene. The song was also performed at the funeral of Princess Diana, at Westminster Abbey on September 6, 1997. Now, 25 years later, the King gave a subtle nod to the mother of his two children, Prince William and Prince Harry. The lyrics themselves borrowed the line from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Song for Athene was composed by Britain's John Tavener with lyrics by Orthodox nun Mother Thekla. Speaking to the people of the United Kingdom for the first time as King, the monarch said: "I speak to you today with feelings of profound sorrow.
"Throughout her life, Her Majesty The Queen – my beloved Mother – was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family, and we owe her the most heartfelt debt any family can owe to their mother; for her love, affection, guidance, understanding and example." On Thursday, September 8, Buckingham Palace confirmed the death of Her Majesty The Queen. They said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. "The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow." King Charles returned on Friday and later made the pre-recorded speech.
Charles also sent his love to Prince Harry and Meghan. He said: "I wish to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives
