Kenan Thompson may bring beloved ‘SNL’ characters to 2022 Emmys

Kenan Thompson will host the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing Monday, Sept. 12 (8 p.m.) on NBC.The 44-year-old comic has come a long way since playing Junior on “The Steve Harvey Show” before moving over to Nickelodeon, first on “All That” and then co-starring with Kel Mitchell on the long-running sitcom “Kenan & Kel” (1990-96).Thompson joined “SNL” in 2003 — the show’s first trouper born after its 1975 premiere — and has been a mainstay ever since, creating popular characters including “Black Jeopardy!” host Darnell Hayes, Diondre Cole (“What’s Up with That?”) and celebrity impressions, including Al Sharpton, Bill Cosby and Harvey).

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards will air Monday night. And if previous Emmy moments are an indication of what’s to come, this year’s show should be full of surprises. The 2021 Emmys saw Cedric the Entertainer's opening monologue roast the British royal family, "Jeopardy!" and more.  Last year's show also took a political turn with a joke about California Gov.

The lineup includes Selena Gomez, “Hacks” stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, “Squid Game” stars Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon, Amy Poehler, Diego Luna and more. The ceremony, which aims to celebrate television’s biggest names and shows, will be hosted by “SNL” star Kenan Thompson. On Wednesday, the  star teased a potential sequel to the 1997 Nickelodeon film -- which featured Thompson alongside Kel Mitchell in the lead roles -- during an appearance on Host Jimmy Fallon -- alongside co-host Demi Lovato — asked the 44-year-old about a joint Instagram post he made with Mitchell last month, celebrating the film's 25th anniversary.«Happy 25th Goodburger!!!
