Claudia Eller Co-Editor-in-ChiefVenus Williams, whom I interviewed as one of our six Power of Women New York honorees, clearly has broken barriers. And she has great admiration for other women who have done the same in their respective realms. As for her biggest role models, Williams says she really doesn’t have to look beyond her own mother and four sisters. However, “I definitely look up to a different, interesting set of women,” she says.
William Earl It goes without saying that Variety’s Power of Women New York event is taking place at an exceptionally difficult and divisive time — and while we are gathering to celebrate the formidable achievements of women in entertainment and the charities they generously support, it also goes without saying that there is still a very long way to go, and the importance of having women in power in entertainment is more vital than ever.On the positive side, there are more women in C-suites and positions of power in the music industry than ever before — as Variety noted earlier this year, even the traditional boys’ club of major-label A&R has seen several female executives made heads of those departments. But as the latest USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report shows, the music industry has a lot of work to do.

You’re absolutely wracked with guilt at “Hangmen” — from laughing so hard at the many, many inappropriate jokes. A crude sight gag near the end had me practically dry heaving. That nonstop naughtiness is what makes Martin McDonagh’s killer satire the best new play on Broadway by a green mile. Two and a half hours, with one intermission.

For Colored Girls, Ntozake Shange’s brilliant work isn’t even just a play, but rather a series of monologues that also incorporate music and dance. The show is a modern-seeming musical of sorts, and it’s impressive that it still feels fresh and timely, as it was originally performed in New York in 1976. The title features seven women who have all faced adversity due to sexism and racism, and while everyone should see it, the event is not running very long, just for 20 weeks.A post shared by for colored girls – Broadway (@forcoloredgirlsbroadway) LGBTQ audiences have a lot of reasons to go see Take Me Out.
