A judge issued a stark warning to abusers after a man narrowly avoided jail for beating his ex-partner in an ‘appalling fashion’. Anthony Broomhead, 34, erupted at his ex-partner, with whom he had been in a long term relationship.
The pair had split up after the relationship became ‘turbulent and abusive’, Manchester Crown Court heard. After an argument in which Broomhead, of Ashton-under-Lyne, assumed she was ‘sexting’ another man, he launched a violent attack on her, punching her repeatedly, forcing her into a headlock and strangling her.
The next morning he continued with the abuse to the point she nearly lost consciousness. He later left, taking her car without her consent, before he was arrested.

At today’s sentencing hearing, a judge begged the question of ‘why anybody who purports to care for another person should behave in an appalling fashion’. He added that the woman was entitled to live how she should wish without any coercive control.
Broomhead pleaded guilty to offences of ABH, taking a vehicle without an owner's consent and driving with no insurance, and was handed a suspended sentence.
Prosecuting, Joshua Bowker said that on March 23 of this year, at around 10pm, Broomhead began demanding to see the woman’s phone, accusing her of seeing other men. An argument ensued, and escalated to the point that he grabbed hold of her arms and dragged her towards him.
“He rearranged his grip to her wrists before dragging her across the room, with her feet dragging on the floor. This caused an injury to her heel,” Mr Bowker said.
“He then got her into a headlock and she was struggling to breathe so she bit him in order
