In a new interview with People published on Monday (June 5), the 19 Kids and Counting alum revealed the reason she decided not to appear in Prime Video’s docuseries Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, which outlines some of the major controversies faced by the Duggar family.

“I was actually approached and asked to participate in the docuseries, but I thought that from my perspective, I really wanted to make sure that I was able to share my story in my own words and in my own timing,” Jinger explained. “So that’s why I wrote Becoming Free Indeed, was to share more of my journey out of IBLP’s teachings.”
IBLP – which stands for the Institute of Basic Life Principles – is the non-denominational Christian organization that the Duggar family followed. Some of the central tenets of IBLP include homeschooling children, female submission and obedience, as well as conservative religious beliefs.
Jinger noted that she’s heard a bit about the docuseries from Jill, adding that she’s “excited to hear what [Jill] has to say, even in this documentary.”
She went on to describe the process of writing her memoir, Becoming Free Indeed, which she hoped would allow her to tell her story in a “God-honoring” and “balanced” way.
“The reason I decided to write Becoming Free Indeed in a book form was because I thought, ‘I want this to be my story in a book form because then whenever people are trying to work through this stuff, they can go back and highlight,’” Jinger said, “and [go], ‘Oh, she was struggling with this too. This is how Jinger kind of walked through it.’”
