Jim Goodwin has hailed Rangers boss Michael Beale as a coach before their Viaplay Cup semi-final showdown. The Aberdeen gaffer is an admirer of the Englishman and believes he was key to the Ibrox club’s title success in 2021 when Steven Gerrard was manager.
Goodwin goes head-to-head with Beale at Hampden today for a place in the final on February 26. And the Irishman admits he’s facing a very different Rangers side to the one Giovanni van Bronckhorst left behind. Goodwin said: “I know Michael is very well respected in the coaching world.
"In his early career, he did a book on his sessions and a lot of people I speak to looked at that and really liked his ideas. He’s a very modern day coach. And his team is set up differently to Van Bronckhorst, which is what Rangers were obviously looking for. Giovanni’s results were poor at times but it wasn’t a poor team. The way they played the game was very good.
“But Michael has put a different spin on it. His wingers don’t stay wide anymore like in Gio’s team - they come in the pitch.
“Rangers overload the middle area now, trying to get Malik Tillman, Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala into little pockets of space. That’s something we’ll have to be wary of on Sunday.
“Michael’s a good coach. Without taking anything away from Steven Gerrard and what he did at Rangers - a lot of the talk coming out of Ibrox was that Michael was a huge influence.
“You saw towards the end of Steven’s reign at Aston Villa when Michael went to QPR, things weren’t as good as they were before. That proves how important your backroom team is and why it’s good to hire people who are better at certain things than you are.”
