Angelique Jackson Rideback founder and CEO Dan Lin has announced the launch of “Rideback Rise,” a non-profit accelerator focused on developing BIPOC-created film, TV, digital and audio content.Rideback — the entertainment company known for producing “The LEGO Movie” and “It” movie franchises, as well as Disney’s “Aladdin,” along with series television including the CW’s “Walker” — has developed the accelerator program to support BIPOC writers, filmmakers and entrepreneurs and their projects as a “means to advance racial equity in mainstream entertainment.”“When I started my career, first as a creative executive and then as an entrepreneur, I benefited from the mentorship and generosity of leaders in both a formal and informal way,” stated Lin, pointing to industry leaders including Alan Horn, Lorenzo DiBonaventura, Jeff Robinov and Peter Roth, who guided him “in an era long before the industry’s recent racial reckoning.” “But they took a bet on helping a 25-year-old intern from Taiwan who had no connections in Hollywood,” he explained.

As Emmy Nomination Voting Ends, Don’t Forget About These Worthy Contenders

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargeThe barrage of TV launches over the past several months has further blurred the sense of time. Although series like “Ted Lasso,” “Succession” and “Dopesick” remain front-runners in their respective comedy, drama and limited-series categories, they all aired last fall. Are they vulnerable when it comes time for Phase 2 final voting?Maybe, or perhaps not, as they’ve been consistently at the top of most pundits’ prediction pages.

Wine, Pickleball, Mustaches and Lots of Penis: Here Are the Trends Found All Over This Year’s Emmy Contenders

As my colleague Emily Longeretta recently noted, stars like Elle Fanning (“The Great,” “The Girl From Plainville”), Chloë Sevigny (“Russian Doll,” “Plainville”), Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve,” “The Chair”), Julia Garner (“Ozark,” “Inventing Anna”) and Nicole Byer (“Grand Crew,” “Nailed It!”) are just some of the performers eligible for multiple projects in this year’s Emmy race. That’s a tremendous trend among actors.

How Late-Night TV Shows’ Post-Pandemic Changes Could Impact Emmys’ Variety Talk Race

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargeIt’s a race that has been dominated by “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” since 2016, after Jon Stewart left “The Daily Show.” Ironically, Stewart is back in contention this year with “The Problem With Jon Stewart.” But the larger question of whether Oliver’s dominance may finally be tested comes as the talkers showcase COVID-era creative renaissance. With no audience to play with, James Corden turned to the staff and producers in his empty studio — and made CBS late-night exec Nick Bernstein into a star, as he was the butt of countless jokes and stunts. “The Daily Show” created segments in of the correspondents’ homes, and musical guests left the studio and produced what were essentially mini-music videos for their appearances.

Why the Emmys’ Reality Categories Continue to Be the Toughest to Break Into

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargeThe Emmy category for competition series should conceivably be the most dynamic one out there. Ditto for the structured and unstructured reality categories. Yet there’s a surprisingly stagnant nature to them.Part of that is just the nature of ongoing reality TV.
