France’s National Cinema Federation (FNCF), which represents exhibitors in the market, has said it “firmly protests” Disney’s decision to bypass French cinemas with animated adventure pic Strange World.

Elsa Keslassy International CorrespondentDisney has revealed that it will forgo the French theatrical release of “Strange World,” Don Hall’s animated action adventure movie, which was scheduled to hit local cinemas on Nov. 23.The writing had been on the wall for the studio since France unveiled its new — and still very strict — windowing rules in late January, setting Disney’s subscription-based streaming window at 17 months following the French theatrical release of its movies.Besides the lengthy SVOD window, Disney has also been up in arms about the fact that it must temporarily pull titles from its platforms five months later so that free-to-air channels can have their own exclusive window.

Disney is taking a stance versus the recently revised French windowing system, opting to bypass theatrical on animated action adventure Strange World in the market and sending it directly to Disney Plus.

“Prey” also features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native American and First Nation talent, including star Amber Midthunder (“The Ice Road,” “Roswell, New Mexico”) alongside newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (“Sooyii”), Michelle Thrush (“The Journey Home”) and Julian Black Antelope (“Tribal”). Overall, “The Last Daughter” was a great directorial debut for Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film, an adaptation of an Elena Ferrante novel, debuted at the Venice Film Festival last year and got a four-minute standing ovation.
