The Inside Soap Awards returned this evening, and for the first time in two years, they weren't virtual, as organisers threw a star-studded event to mark 30 years of the hit magazine. A whole host of stars from soapland bagged some of the coveted gongs, with Best Actress being won by EastEnders' Gillian Taylforth and Best Actor scooped by Emmerdale's Mark Charnock, whose character Marlon's stroke plot also won Best Storyline.
Emmerdale, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this week, was strong across the board at the Inside Soap Awards, as it also picked up accolades for Marlon’s relationship with Rhona Dingle (Zoe Henry) which won Best Romance. Meanwhile, Paige Sandhu is Best Villain for the second year, for her performance as Emmerdale serial killer Meena Jutla – but the ITV show missed out on the biggest accolade of the night.
Lacey Turner, 34, who has played EastEnders' Stacey Slater since 2004, took home the gold as she won Inside Soap's All-Time Icon award. Inside Soap editor Gary Gillatt said: “As a six-time winner of our Best Actress prize, it’s perhaps no surprise that Lacey takes home our All-Time Icon award.
Ever since her EastEnders debut in 2004, Lacey’s heartfelt performance as Stacey Slater – taking her from troubled teenager to lion-hearted young mum – has touched soap fans everywhere. Long may it continue!” Speaking about the awards in general, Gary said: “An even spread of wins across Britain’s favourite TV shows is testament to a great year of soap.
