Everyone knows the Queen loves chocolate cake on her birthday - but what about presents? Records released by Buckingham Palace showed our monarch received 72 official presents in 2019, including a pop-up book from Chinese President Xi Jinping, and a 24-carat gold-plated horse comb. So, as Her Majesty turns 96, what do you get a woman who has it all? Biographer Ian Lloyd, author of The Queen: 70 Chapters in the Life of Elizabeth II says what the Queen wants most is practical items.
And there’s only one member of staff who has the intel: the royal dressmaker. Speaking exclusively to OK!, Ian explains: “If the family asks, ‘What does Granny want this year? Angela Kelly can offer practical options that she knows the Queen would be delighted with.” Despite living in luxurious palaces, the Queen’s wish list isn’t as grand as you might expect.
Ian adds: “The Queen isn’t massively into presents, and the last thing she’d want is another piece of jewellery.” So, a nice new necklace or brooch is off the list - what else? Well, it seems handmade items are accepted very gratefully. One Christmas, Kate Middleton went the extra mile to make the Queen her family recipe marrow chutney - it went down a treat. The next day, Kate noticed the chutney was on the dinner table.
