Regina King is mourning the death of her son Ian Alexander Jr., who died by suicide at the age of 26. “Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian,” the Oscar winner, 51, said in a statement on January 22, per People. “He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you.”

1. Ian was Regina’s only child Ian Jr. was born on January 19, 1996 to Regina and record producer Ian Alexander. Regina and Ian Sr. married a year later and divorced in 2007. Regina would go on to admit raising her only child as a single parent wasn’t always easy, but well worth it. “You don’t know what unconditional love is. You may say you do, but if you don’t have a child, you don’t know what that is,” she told People. “When you experience it, it’s the most fulfilling [thing] ever.”
