Ants can be a real issue at this time of year, with lots of people fighting infestations in their home. But one expert has shared some top tips on ways to get rid of the bugs.
Jonathon Nicholls, a pest control expert, says ants will be attracted to any spaces with food, with the insects more likely to invade during the warmer months due to people leaving doors and windows open more often. Ripe fruits also attract the pests, meaning it is a good idea to keep that kind of thing in the fridge or well-covered.
Speaking to the MailOnline, the expert explained that the metabolic rate of ants increases in the summer - another reason behind their spike in activity, reports The Mirror.
"The heightened activity of ants in the summer months can increase the likelihood that ants may enter your home during these months. The peak breeding season for ants is during the summer. During this time, they require more resources and the worker ants will go out to find food sources. This can result in an increased presence of ants in your garden or in your home, " he said.
Keeping things clean and getting rid of both sources and smells of food can keep the insects away. Whether it be making sure there is no dirty cutlery around or sticky leftover of jam prints on the counter.
The most common home invaders are black garden ants, with the tiny insects most attracted to sweet foods.
The pests will make their way indoors through gaps beneath doors or any unsealed cracks. They follow scents, meaning they will head towards any food lying around.
