How ‘The Good Lord Bird,’ ‘One Night in Miami’ Casting Directors Found Their Icons

Golden Globes 2021 nominations are in, and there’s some good news. This year, three women received nominations in the prestigious Best Director category, breaking a five-year streak of male-dominated nods: Regina King for One Night in Miami, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman and Chloé Zhao for Nomadland.

This season's many awards possibilities directed by women are as different as Nomadland, Chloé Zhao's expansive view of itinerant Americans today, and One Night in Miami, Regina King's tightly focused drama about soon-to-be Black icons in the 1960s. But within that range, one especially eye-opening trend has emerged.
