Manchester’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2038 is an achievable one, but the city doesn’t exist in a bubble and a whole system approach is necessary if it is to succeed.
We plan to invest £12.5 billion in low carbon infrastructure across the UK and Ireland by 2026, that’s around £7 million pounds a day. However, how and where that money is spent is key.
There are, of course, large-scale projects underway. Take for example SSE’s Coire Glas project in the Scottish Highlands. It is the first large-scale pumped storage scheme to be developed in the UK for more than 30 years and with a potential capacity of up to 1500MW would more than double Great Britain’s existing electricity storage capacity.
Our first battery storage facility is under construction in Wiltshire, we are providing smart networks for Europe’s largest industrial estate in Slough and let’s not forget, of course, the 1,075MW Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm project or the world’s largest offshore wind energy project, the 3.6GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm.
Success will rely as much on smaller, localised solutions as on grander schemes though. For example, we are working closely with Monmouthshire
